How to Prepare for Your First Professional Photoshoot

So, you’ve booked your first professional photoshoot—exciting! But now you’re wondering, "What do I do with my hands?!" Don't worry, I got you. Whether you're gearing up for a portrait session, engagement shoot, or personal branding extravaganza, preparation is key. As a Halifax-based photographer, I’ve seen it all (yes, even that time someone brought their pet iguana). So, let’s dive into how to make your photoshoot stress-free and, dare I say, fun!

1. Choose the Right Photographer

Picking a photographer is kind of like dating—look at their portfolio, check out their reviews, and make sure you vibe with them. You don’t want someone who makes you feel like an awkward mannequin. Halifax has plenty of talented photographers, so find one that makes you feel like a rockstar, not a deer in headlights.... LIKE ME!

2. Pick the Perfect Location

Halifax has some amazingggg backdrops. Think about what vibe you’re going for:

  • The trail down the street from your house – For when you want to look like mystical forest creatures
  • Downtown Halifax – If you're not shy and don't mind crowds, love the urban look and occasional photobombing seagulls and tourists, this spot is for you!
  • The beach or Rocky Shorelines – For candid fun vibes, and dramatic, “I could totally be in a magazine” shots.
  • Public Gardens – If you want flowers and manicured garden vibes

Most importantly though, pick a location you're comfortable with, and even something special to you!

I also have a mental rolodex of perfect spots. Just ask!

3. Plan Your Outfit(s)

Wardrobe choices can make or break your photos. Follow these golden rules:

  • Wear something you can actually breathe in. If it's cutting off circulation, it’s a no.
  • Solid colours and even subtle patterns work best—no one wants to compete with your neon zebra-print shirt.
  • Consider the weather. Halifax can go from sunny to “I think I just got hit by a hurricane” real quick. If it's a windy day, maybe a short skirt isn't the best options. AND BRING LAYERS FOR WHEN THE TEMPERATURE CHANGES IT'S MIND!
  • Bring options! If you spill coffee on yourself (it happens) or your kid smashes their car snack into their shirt, you’ll be glad you did.

4. Get Hair & Makeup Done (If Possible)

If your budget allows, a little professional touch-up can go a long way. If not, aim for a natural but polished look. Pro tip: bring a comb and some blotting paper. Halifax humidity shows no mercy.

5. Practice Posing

It sounds super silly, but unless you moonlight as a supermodel, being in front of the camera can feel awkward. Stand in front of a mirror, practice a soft (or big) smile, try some angles, un-tense those shoulders, and figure out which side is your “good side” (spoiler: you have one). Your photographer will guide you, but it doesn’t hurt to be prepared.

6. Communicate with Your Photographer

Got a weird dimple you’re self-conscious about? Hate your left eyebrow? Tell your photographer! The more they know, the better they can work their magic.

7. Embrace the Experience

At the end of the day, this is about having fun. Laugh, move around, and just be yourself. The best photos happen when you’re not overthinking it.

Your first professional photoshoot doesn’t have to be stressful!
