The Best Times of Year for Family Photos in Nova Scotia
As a family photographer based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, one of the most common questions I get is: "When is the best time of year to book our family photos?"
The good news is, there’s truly no bad time — each season in Nova Scotia offers something unique, from the golden glow of summer at the beaches on the South Shore, to the crisp colours of fall in the Annapolis Valley
Here’s a breakdown of what you can expect throughout the year — from lighting to scenery — to help you choose the perfect time for your next family photoshoot.
Vibe: Fresh, apple and cherry blossoms, full of life and colour
Lighting: From soft and diffused to bright and sunny, perfect for portraits either way
Scenery: Blossoms, budding trees, and lush greens
Spring in Nova Scotia is all about new beginnings after a long hard winter, making it a beautiful time for family photos — especially if you love soft feminine colours and florals.
Location Ideas: Think cherry, peach and apple blossoms in Wolfville, or magnolia trees at the Halifax Public Gardens bursting back to life.
Bonus: Temperatures are still mild, so not as much glistening sweat, and locations are often less busy than in the summer.

Vibe: Warm, vibrant, playful
Lighting: Long golden hours perfect for sunset sessions
Scenery: Beaches, blue skies, wildflowers, and lush greenery. Summer is ideal if you’re dreaming of a warm coastal or beach session, or laying in the grass having a picnic at your local park.
Location Ideas: Places Herring Cove Look off for a real Nova Scotia Coastal Vibe, or beaches like Conrad's, or if you're on the South Shore -- Rissers or Green Bay Beach. Parks in Halifax like Seaview Look Off and Public Gardens come alive in the summer. Evening sessions are best to avoid harsh midday sun and heat, and catch that dreamy golden hour glow.
Tip: Summer sunsets in Nova Scotia happen late, so plan for later evening sessions (after 7:30 pm) for the best light.

Vibe: Cozy, warm, and nostalgic
Lighting: Soft, golden, and flattering
Scenery: Early fall offers bright and vibrant foliage in reds, oranges, and yellows, where as late fall is more muted tones if you don't want over the top orange vibes.
Fall is hands down one of the most popular times for family photos in Halifax — and for good reason. The leaves change, the air turns crisp, and the colours create a stunning natural backdrop.
Location Ideas: Apple orchards and pumpkin fields in the valley are my go-to for fall vibes, but parks like Point Pleasant Park, in Halifax, and Irishman's in Windsor are perfect for showcasing the autumn palette.
Note: Fall dates book quickly and the leaves are short lived and drop fast at the end of October — plan ahead!

Vibe: Intimate, magical, and festive
Lighting: Cool tones, soft light on cloudy days, early sunsets.
Scenery: Snowy landscapes, holiday vibes, cozy sweaters
While often overlooked, winter can be a gorgeous time for photos — especially if you love the idea of a snowy backdrop or cozy, candid family moments.
Location Ideas: Winter sessions work beautifully downtown for an urban vibe since there aren't many "dead" looking trees, at your favourite old growth hemlock forest like Glenn Allan Park in Bridgewater, or even at a Christmas tree farm for a holiday feel! If you're really wanting a shoot in the winter but don't want to be cold outside, consider doing a cozy in-home session!
Tip: Dress warmly and embrace the season — think scarves, knits, and hot chocolate.
