Bennett Family: Backyard + Lake Session in Herring Cove

Late October in Herring Cove is always magical, and the Bennett family session was no exception. We started in their backyard on the rocks that cover the ground in that area. Everyone was dressed to perfection with outfits that harmonized beautifully with the season’s fiery reds and golden yellows.

The kids were absolute angels: so well-behaved, funny, and full of personality, making every moment effortless to capture (read until the end for tips on how to prep your kiddos for photo sessions!)

We made our way to their favourite lake, where the red leaves and yellow hemlocks of late fall framed the scene perfectly. The evening was overcast, so we didn’t have that classic golden glow but the soft, diffused light created a beautifully moody atmosphere that made the photos feel intimate and like heirlooms waiting to be made.

Watching the family snuggle, laugh, explore, and enjoy the crisp autumn air together made the session feel effortless and full of heart.

Sessions like these are a reminder of how special it is to capture families in the moments they love most—whether it’s a backyard snuggle puddle, or a walk to a favourite lake. The Bennetts brought warmth, style, and so much personality to their session, making every image a little piece of autumn perfection.

Tips for Prepping Kids for a Photo Shoot

Keep it familiar: Bring a favourite toy, snack, or blanket to help kids feel comfortable.

Timing is everything: While planning the best time for the session with your photographer is ideal (we always know when the light will be best in the location of your choice) making sure we pick a time that works for your family and kids is also important!

Dress for comfort (and style!): Choose outfits that are both cute and comfortable, so kids can move freely and have fun. H&M, Old Navy, and Zara Kids are great affordable options where comfort meets style.

Set clear expectations: Explain what’s happening in simple terms, so it doesn’t feel like just playtime. For example: “We are going to meet up with someone who is going to take our photos for an hour, and you need to have your listening ears on.”

Plan for bribes and breaks: Snacks or small treats can work wonders! Bring something special your kids love but don’t normally get—chocolate or a favorite cookie works great. You can say: “You can have a chocolate, but only after you participate a little longer!” This keeps things fun but encourages cooperation.

Let them lead sometimes: Kids often shine when they can choose a pose, explore, or show their personality naturally.

With a little planning, patience, and a few fun incentives, kids can be relaxed, happy, and genuinely themselves—just like the Bennett family during their moody, magical autumn session.
