What to Wear for Your Family Photo Session –
A Halifax Nova Scotia Candid Photographer’s Guide
Planning a family photo session is such a special way to capture memories that you’ll cherish for years. But once the date is booked and the location is set (maybe one of Halifax’s beautiful waterfront spots or a golden-hour session in Point Pleasant Park), the next question I get asked is: What should we wear?
As a family photographer here in Halifax, Nova Scotia, I’ve learned that what you wear truly makes a difference in how your photos turn out — not just aesthetically, but in how you feel in front of the camera. So, here’s my guide to help take the stress out of choosing your outfits:

Gone are the days of everyone in jeans and white shirts (unless that’s your style!). Instead, choose 3-4 complementary colors that work well together and reflect the season. Think:
- Spring: pastel tones, florals, soft neutrals
- Summer: soft blues, whites, blush pinks, light grey
- Fall: deep greens, rusts, mustard yellows, burgundy
- Winter: navy, deep reds, creams, forest green
In Halifax, we’re blessed with stunning natural backdrops — beaches, parks, historic buildings — so choosing tones that complement the surroundings is a great idea.

Textures photograph beautifully — think knit sweaters, linen dresses, denim, or a wool scarf. Layering (like cardigans, vests, or scarves) not only adds visual interest but also gives you flexibility if the weather changes — and we know how fast that can happen here in Nova Scotia!
Big logos or characters on shirts can be distracting and take the focus away from what matters — your family connection. Similarly, neon colours can reflect onto skin and create strange tones in photos. Stick to subtle patterns (like florals, plaids, or small prints) and classic timeless looks.
Choose outfits that allow you and your kids to move comfortably. Some of the best family moments are captured when you're playing, walking, or sharing a laugh — not stiffly posing. Dresses that catch the ocean breeze or little ones in cozy knits make for dreamy, natural photos.

Footwear should complement your outfits and location. Heading to a beach in Lawrencetown? Barefoot is perfect. Wandering through downtown Halifax? Cute boots, simple sneakers, or dress shoes work well.
Avoid overly sporty sneakers unless that fits your family's vibe.

Adding accessories like hats, jewellery, or even a special cozy blanket that grandma made can bring personality and warmth to your photos.
Bonus: a blanket is handy if the wind picks up or little ones need a cuddle break.

Before the session, lay everyone’s outfits out together on the floor or your bed. This helps you see if the colours flow, and ensures no one sticks out.

Simple vs Bold Choices
Neutrals always photograph beautifully – but rules are meant to be broken...
Soft whites, beiges, and earth tones? Timeless. They let your connection shine, bring a calm, dreamy feel to your images, and work like a charm in every setting.
But you know what else photographs beautifully? You when you feel like yourself.
If that means showing up in a bold colour like LIME GREEN, dressing your kids in the funky patterns they like, you and your lover wearing your favourite vintage band tees, or everyone looking like they're ready to run a marathon in their fave leggings and puffer vests – do it. Because when you feel good in what you're wearing, that confidence shows up in the photos. And that’s what really makes them magic.
So yes, I’ll always give you guidance on what photographs well – but your photos should reflect you. Let’s create something that feels like your real story, not a Pinterest mood board (unless that’s your thing, in which case – let’s go full Pinterest).
