Why I Don’t Do Mini Sessions
(Even Though They’re Super Trendy)
If you’ve been browsing photographers in Halifax, chances are you’ve seen ads for “Mini Sessions!” everywhere. They’re quick, cheap, and often come with promises like “5 photos in 15 minutes!” Sounds great, right?
Mini sessions definitely have their place in the photography world. But after years of photographing families, I’ve realized they just don’t align with how I want to serve you.
GASP!
I know... But let me explain.
Mini Sessions Are Like Speed Dating…
Most folks think "oh my kid is only going to sit still for 10 minutes so a mini session is perfect!" or "my spouse doesn't like smiling for photos so something short is better". But here's the thing... Mini sessions are kind of like speed dating for photographers.
You get a very short amount of time to make magic happen. Kids aren’t exactly known for their emotional readiness. Some kids need a bit of time to warm up. Others arrive ready to party, but only for seven minutes, then they’re over it and no more smiles for a bit. Sometimes, someone needs to pee, someone else is crying over a snack, and we’re still in the “getting to know you” phase when the session is supposed to be over.
Basically mini sessions and kids? Not always the best match, as strange as it sounds!
I Don’t Want to Rush Your Moments
I’m not in the business of staged smiles and perfectly posed nonsense. I’m here for the real stuff. The belly laughs, the windblown hair, the sandy toes, the big hugs and shy snuggles. The moments that unfold naturally—without someone (me) constantly checking the time!
In a full session, we have room to breathe. We can pause if someone needs a snack or a cuddle or a mid-session pep talk. We can explore a beach or wander a trail or just hang out in your backyard while your kids do their thing. No pressure. No stopwatch. Just real, joyful connection.
You Deserve More Than a “Quick Pic”
Look, I get the appeal of mini sessions—they’re usually cheaper, they’re fast, and they’re convenient. But I also believe your family memories deserve more than a time slot and a handful of edited images. You deserve the full experience: thoughtful planning, meaningful location, personalized guidance, and photos that actually feel like your family—not just the Instagram version of it.
Mini sessions don’t give me the time or flexibility to offer that level of care—and your family deserves nothing less.
So What Do I Offer?
Instead of minis, I offer full-length 1-2 hour sessions that are fun, relaxed, and totally tailored to you. Whether we’re chasing golden light at Conrad's Beach or spending an afternoon soaking up the sun with the apple blossoms in Wolfville, we’ll take the time to make it something special.
No stress. No rush. Just your family, your way.
Less Rush, More Meaning
The pressure of “we only have 15 minutes to preform and get it right” can feel overwhelming... not only for me, but especially for parents AND kids!
Kids need time to warm up. They might need a snack, a cry, or just a few minutes to explore, run around, and settle in. And that’s okay! In a full session, we follow their lead. No pressure, no timer, just meaningful moments unfolding naturally.
If that sounds like your vibe, let’s make some magic together.
